My father was a writer. He wrote all of his life, inflicting upon many of us his novels, plays, articles, essays, and self-help books. Some were marvelous; some merely well-intentioned. But of all the things he wrote, his journal is his legacy: by turns wise and bewildering, it neared 1,100 type-written pages when he died in 2010. Although perused many times, this is the first time it will be read - cover to cover, page after page.

Change in Therapy
If a situation is not resolved after a certain number of sessions, is it reasonable to wonder if resolution is available to this person at this time? I think this may be so, that if change is not underway by the eighth or tenth session it may not be time for that change to occur. New issues may have arisen which obscure focus on them, more pressing concerns. There may also have been a shift in the focus of the treatment, but at some time if something has not been dealt with the process is better suspended than sustained. It may also be that with this therapist this change cannot be considered, and the changing of therapists is the needed response. Unfortunately, few of us are able to say, "I cannot help you with this."
